9. Make it yours#

In this chapter you change shortcuts, colors, and behavior in the config file.

Text size#

Action Keys
Larger text Ctrl+=
Smaller text Ctrl+-

The config file#

mpmux reads ~/.config/mpmux/config.toml (or $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/mpmux/config.toml). Write a file with every setting and its default value:

mpmux --write-default-config ~/.config/mpmux/config.toml

After you edit the file, choose Reload Config in the command palette. Most settings apply at once. mpmux reports settings it does not know.

Shortcuts#

mpmux shortcuts are on by default. If a program in the terminal needs one of these keys, change the binding, or set enable-host-shortcuts = false in [host-ui] to pass every key to the terminal.

The [keybindings] section maps actions to keys. Write keys as modifiers and a key joined with -:

[keybindings]
command-palette = "ctrl-shift-p"
new-tab = "ctrl-shift-t"
split-pane-right = "ctrl-shift-o"
split-pane-down = "ctrl-shift-e"
toggle-pane-maximize = "ctrl-shift-return"
toggle-overview = "ctrl-alt-o"
focus-split-left = "ctrl-alt-left"
jump-to-previous-prompt = "ctrl-shift-pageup"
jump-to-next-prompt = "ctrl-shift-pagedown"

Look#

The [host-ui] section controls the window around the terminals. Some examples:

[host-ui]
show-tab-bar = true
show-active-pane-border = true
active-pane-border-color = "#9edfff33" # RGBA
inactive-pane-dim-opacity = 0.3 # dim panes without focus; 0 turns it off
pane-maximize-animation-secs = 0.5 # 0 turns the animation off
toast-placement = "center"
dock-position = "right" # left, right, top or bottom

The sidebar (the dock with messages, the run monitor, the todos) can sit at any window edge. Drag it by its title: drop zones show where it will land. On a touch screen, hold the title a moment before you drag. Its menu (☰) has Left, Right, Top, and Bottom too. mpmux remembers the place in dock-position.

Behavior#

Setting Section What it does
scrollback-lines [terminal] Lines each pane keeps for scrolling back
mouse-scroll-multiplier-precision [host-ui] Scroll speed for touchpads
mouse-scroll-multiplier-discrete [host-ui] Scroll speed for mouse wheels
max-pane-nesting-level [host-ui] How deep splits can nest
mpmux-keyboard-height-portrait-ratio [host-ui] Height of the mpmux keyboard, as part of the screen
max-zoom [overview] How far the overview zooms in
layout-mode [overview] "auto" or "manual" card layout

Every setting, with its default and allowed values, is in the config reference; every shortcut in keys and gestures.

Chapter 10 shows how to drive mpmux from scripts and agents.
